The History of Raleigh

Raleigh is known for being the capital city of the state of North Carolina while being the most populous city in Wake County.  Although it is the second largest city in the state, behind Charlotte, it is considered the heart beat of the State because of its culture and central location.  Raleigh is also known as the “City of Oaks”, or “Oak City” by locals because of its vast array of oak trees throughout the entire city.

The city itself was named after the famed explorer, Sir Walter Raleigh, who is known around the globe for establishing the lost Roanoke Colony in 1585.  This is why it is common to see many references to Sir Walter Raleigh throughout the city. The city of Raleigh covers roughly 150 square miles of land with an estimated population of close to 500,00 in the city itself, with more than 2 million residents in the surrounding area.  Raleigh has been voted one of the fastest growing cities in the United States for the past few years because of the growing technology and agricultural fields in the area.

Raleigh and nearby areas are known around the country for their collection of high level universities such as Duke University, the University of Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, and many other schools that provide the area with a high level education system and jobs.

The Majority of Raleigh is located within Wake County, while there are a few zones that extend into Durham County.  When locals think of Raleigh, they also think of the many surrounding towns such as Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Garner, Clayton, Wake Forest, Fuquay-Varina, Morrisville, and more.  Each of these surrounding cities and towns provide Raleigh with a unique culture and diversity. This abundance of cultural diversity is something that separates Raleigh from other Southern metropolis.

The downtown area of Raleigh is filled with historical events all the way from it being founded as one of the first planned cities in the United States.  Shortly after the American Revolutionary War, the colonists of the newly founded United States of American decided that Raleigh would be one of the first planned cities that was put together in order to provide their growing country with enough land to prosper.  The design and architecture of the city was carefully planned out in a grid pattern surround the Capital Building in Union Square. You can see the clear design of the city to this day. The city was safe from any major disasters throughout the American Civil War but has gone through a variety of different economical changes from then to the present day.  The city used to rely solely on agricultural produces such as tobacco, but has evolved into a technology and business hub. The Research Triangle Park (RTP) area of Raleigh is considered one of the largest technology hubs in the South.
